WMRT 2011: Mirsky Is the New ‘King of the Mountain’

Torvar Mirsky is the new ‘King of the Mountain’ after beating Pierre-Antoine Morvan in the final of the 2011 St. Moritz Match Race. Ian Williams finished in third place to move up into first position in the overall Championship standings going into stage 7 of the World Match Racing Tour.

In the end, a count back decided both the final and petit final on Lake St. Moritz. The Maloja breeze had arrived like clockwork all week however on the final day, heavy cloud cover and light rain created much lighter conditions and continual wind shifts that made racing impossible. After a series of race abandonments, the Race Committee decided to end racing with no races completed in either the final or petit final.

Jérémie Beyou crowned king of the Solitaire du Figaro 2011

Jérémie Beyou crossed the line first to win the fourth and final leg from Les Sables d’Olonne to Dieppe. By finishing in Dieppe ahead of the rest of the fleet, and scoring his third consecutive victory, BPI’s skipper Jérémie Beyou was crowned overall winner of the 2011 Solitaire du Figaro, an edition he dominated from the outset. This win means he joins the exclusive club of double winners of the event.

A week of big winds and high adrenalin action, Act 5 of the Extreme Sailing Series at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week delivered some of the closest and intense ‘Stadium Racing’ the circuit has ever seen – in front of the biggest crowds ever recorded for the event. The ultimate winner was The Wave, Muscat, skippered by local Isle of Wight born Leigh McMillan, Britain’s Olympic Tornado representative in Beijing 2008. For last year’s overall winners, this was the Omani team’s first Act win this year.

Extreme Sailing Series Cowes: Collision

In the fourth race on the second day of the Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 from Cowes, France’s Groupe Edmond de Rothschild ploughed into Sweden’s Artemis Racing at the top mark resulting in severe damage to both boats – bad enough to end their racing for the day. A busy night in the pitlanes is expected to get them racing again tomorrow.
